The terms IoT and IIoT are commonly used but not many people are aware of the difference between the two. Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) are revolutionary technologies that have created several opportunities for businesses. Applications like controlling light switches or temperature remotely not only make life easier but also help in saving electricity and reducing energy costs. So, IoT is a network of connected devices that can communicate with each other through the Internet. 

IIoT – Industrial Internet of Things

IIoT is a branch of IoT that has applications for industries and businesses. Industries set a network of smart devices that are connected via the internet to collect, monitor, exchange, and analyze data at the industrial level. IIoT is widely used by industries such as manufacturing, power plants, agriculture, oil & gas. IoT is an umbrella term and IIoT is its subset that mainly focuses on industrial applications. Industrial devices and equipment are fitted with sensors to capture data in real-time that allows businesses to make decisions faster and more accurately. The collected data is used for several purposes that help businesses grow and become more efficient. IoT technology enables collecting data automatically from connected devices. The gathered data is transmitted to a central system via the Internet. This collected data is used for applications like predictive maintenance, tracking inventory, and much more. 

The Differences & Similarities between IoT and IIoT

IoT and IIoT are similar in ways that both involve connecting devices via the internet. As mentioned above, IIoT is a part of IoT and both use similar connector interfaces and intelligence. However, the purpose of IoT is to make consumers’ live more convenient and easier. IIoT, on the other hand, is used for business purposes to increase safety and efficiency in production facilities. It means that the end goal of IoT and IIoT is different. The analysis of data collected by industrial systems helps in discovering deeper insights and predicts future outcomes.
