How to Convert Windows 10 ESD & UUP files to ISO file

Microsoft pushes new insider builds often for the users who have signed for Insider Preview. So when a user gets a new build from Windows update it actually in ESD format file, which is highly compressed resulting less file size comparing to a typical Windows ISO file.

Also, you can get such ESD and UUP files from the internet or used some tool that fetches the files from Microsoft (we’ve talked about them here). So if you have downloaded a Windows Insider preview’s ESD file UUP files from the internet, and you want to install it on your computer because it saves the internet bandwidth, but you do need to extract that and convert into an ISO file in order to create bootable installation media from it.



Perhaps not all users want to install new insider builds using the typical way that’s why some folks created a workaround to convert official ESD files provided by Microsoft into standard ISO files so that you can store it on your computer and create an Installation media whenever you need.

Changing Windows 10 ESD file to ISO

Today, In this tutorial I am going to demonstrate you how you can convert any ESD file into a fully functional ISO format so you can create installation media create installation media. Please assume that you are not signed up for insider preview program and proceed to the steps below.Even if you have participated in the program in Windows settings that will still work if you are going to do a clean installation of Windows insider build.

Step 1. Download Required Files

  1. ESD file: Windows 10 ESD Download links.
  2. Decrypter Tool: Download
  3. Rufus (To create bootable USB)

Tip: Extract and move the decrypter folder in the Local Disk C:/ root folder, as sometimes the script does not load if running from other hard drive or folder. For example, make a folder inside local disc c, name it ” Windows Insider” copy all the decrypter files to the folder, move the ESD file and Rufus tool along with them.


Step 2. Convert ESD to ISO

Open the decrypt.Cmd file, and choose an option for example Type 1 or 2 and hit enter to create an ISO file from an ESD file. Note that there should be a .esd file in the same folder from where you are running the script.

If you chose to convert ESD file to an ISO file, The process would start, in the first phase, it will create a boot.wim file.

The next phase will take longer as it will decrypt the install.wim file which will be around 7 GB in size. Also, you could have selected this second option which will create a compressed install.win file, but it’s not a problem unless you are converting a multi-variant ESD, then, of course, you need a higher capacity USB drive.

After a couple of minutes (depending on your processor speed) the process will complete then you can press any key to exit from the script.

The ISO file will be saved in the same directory from where you launch the script. I suppose you are going to create a bootable USB drive, so in that case, I will suggest you use RUFUS tool. Download the RUFUS tool and say it in the same folder just for simplifying the process.


Step 3. Create Bootable Installation Media

Now open the Rufus tool and drag the ISO file inside it, it will automatically just for your computer’s configuration and select options that matter. Now click on the start button and wait until the process finishes.

After that, you can either upgrade the existing installed Windows insider build on your computer or do a fresh installation of Windows Insider builds.

Changing Windows 10 UUP files to ISO

Getting UUP files from UUP dump site. Go to this website and select “Latest build (Mostly Insider builds) or known builds (Public releases).

Download each and every file listed on a particular build page, there will be around 20 and more file links you need to download each and every file and copy them to a single folder also run the rename script (will be after file links, open notepad and paste the given code and save it as “anything.cmd” and run it from the same folder where all the UUP file are stored) to rename their names so the conversation can take place with the following tool.

Tip: I’ve used the IDM Chrome module to gather all links at once. The IDM’s site grabber works the same. You can use other tool or download each file individually.

How to download Windows 10 UUP files and change them to ISO

Get this tool to change UUP files into ISO file. Extract it on your computer and inside it, there is “UUP” folder, for convenience you should copy all the renamed UUP files here (also copy the folder location as the tool will ask for it).


This tool converts the UUP files to a standard ISO file, keep patience as it will take from minutes to an hour depending on your computer’s speed.
